ID help with strange plant...

Hey all, I'm new here. I was wondering if someone could help me ID this strange plant I found in Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve in Woodside, CA. Here's the pic:

Weird plant

It was growing on the trunk (epiphytic?) of a big-leaf maple or a hazlenut (can't quite remember) in a very cool, moist gully filled with redwoods. The "leaves" were ~5 inches long. At first I thought it might be some kind of liverwort, but when I got home and looked up some liverworts, I wasn't so sure. This thing has me completely stumped, so if anyone out there knows their California plants, I'd love some suggestions.

I have no idea what kind of plant it is either, but it is quite funky looking!

my vote would be liverwort too. but check for vascular tissue first, then decide where to look next.

Well, it looks thallose.. did you happen to look at the underside of any of the "leaves" at all? I am only familliar with midwest/great lakes bryophytes, and I only have a key for the east coast. Did you notice any gametophytes or sporophytes?

I think that is a lichen. Probably Lobaria:

You are now my official hero. If that's not it, I will eat my hat, shoe, shirt, or any other article of clothing. I can't tell you how much this was bugging me this weekend. Now, to the library for a lichen guide. Thanks!

I urge you to read The Wild Trees by Richard Preston. This amazing plant is vital to the ecology of redwood forests apparently.
